Sin in Linen’s Skull bedding Collection is celebrating it’s 10th birthday! This extremely popular and classic design genre was first developed in 2005. The humble collection beginnings consisted of simply chic pillowcases and throw pillows finely embroidered with skulls on the hem. A lifetime of punk rock music informed this awesome design and the collection only grew more creative from there.
“I was obsessed with the idea of grandma’s linen closet being hijacked by her punk rock granddaughter”, says Sin in Linen founder Sandy Glaze.
This design packed a punk rock punch while being elegant, soft and luxurious. Interestingly, Sin in Linen was the first soft home goods brand to conceive of combining low-brow punk rock imagery with high-quality materials and production. This innovative thinking introduced a brand new style to the world of bedding. Like most innovators, this pattern set a trend in the home goods world- suddenly, skulls and crossbones were popping up left and right!
Years later, the trend continues and we are still exploring creative ways of incorporating one of our favorite pieces of punk rock visual iconography, the skull, into new and exciting bedding styles. Our current Jolly Roger Skull Bedding Collection with coordinating skull duvet cover and skull throw pillow evokes what the boudoir in the galley of a pirate ship may look like. This is the bedding that a maiden would embrace in remembrance of a high seas love affair!
Moving on to our prints! The Skull Bedding Set is playful yet luxurious on 100% sateen cotton. The grand skull of the duvet cover is appliquéd and embroidered to create this bold image. The pillowcase sets display embroidered skulls on the hems. The throw pillow is well-constructed using the soft cotton bedding fabric, piped and embroidered with the matching skull motif.
After playing with a couple of in-your-face large embroidered skull designs we decided to try the more subtle skull and crossbone printed bedding and released the Skull Star sheet set. At the time we shipped a pink version too and we called the black version “Back in Black” and the pink version “Pretty in Pink” to tip our hat to the rock and roll and new wave songs of our childhood!
This skull print gives the optical illusion of a classic polka dot pattern from a distance, but look closer. What seems to be a simple dot pattern is actually badass skulls and nautical tattoo-style stars in an allover print on soft cotton linen. How thrilling! Sheet sets include a fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcase set. Comforters are sold separately- we like to encourage our customers to collect a couple of styles to suit mood and seasons! This print is know around HQ as “The Little Black Dress of Skull Bedding”. Much like an LBD, this print is time-tested suits many tastes, but we especially like it with any gothic bedding style bedroom collection. Then, in 2007, well-known home goods retailers Bed Bath and Beyond and Target picked up these prints for their websites, bringing killer bedding to even more people!
Delving back into the world of embellishments we wanted to play with Dia De Los Muertos imagery, and that’s how our Sugar Skull Bedding was born. The candy-apple red color indicates the festive Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico. Sugar Skulls have become popular for tattoos and graphic design. The juxtaposition of pretty scroll lines interweaving the skull makes this a fun motif for interior design!
Remember when we said earlier how we were trendsetters? Well, suddenly we saw so many products for youths coming out with skulls on them. It seemed like everywhere you looked, there were skull backpacks, skull t-shirts, skull tennis shoes… you get the picture! So naturally (being innovators) we thought, why not Skull Baby Bedding? Why should Baby get left with the same lame pink-or-blue motifs that plagued much of the baby gear out in the retail world. Stimulate baby’s developing eyes and mind with graphic black and white and interesting pattern.
Your little one will sleep peacefully on the same soft and easy to clean 100% cotton sateen fabric as the rest of Sin in Linen bedding. Do the entire nursery in playful, adorable skulls with matching Skull Curtains and Valances. Now, you can set up a baby room as punk rock as yourself, parents!
Thanks for taking this little trip down memory lane with us here at Sin in Linen. We are so happy to offer our many variations of the skull theme and appreciate that our dear customers love our products. Here’s to another 10 years of skulls for your home!
